South Gateway Rotary Club
is Alive and Well!

Wow! What a busy week! Beginning with the weekend of Friday, April 17 our Rotary sponsored and provided transportation for four great Riley High School leaders to RYLA at Camp Tecumseh north of Lafayette. After three days of leadership training all they could do was rave about what a great weekend they had and how important it was to them to be a part of it.

On Saturday, April 18, South Gateway representatives met the Group Study Exchange team from Turkey who had spent the prior week in Crown Point, Indiana. On Tuesday, April 21 our club hosted them for the full day. At lunch the Team made a wonderful presentation about their beautifulcountry. The room was almost full and the meeting was fun. Many thanks to Don Napoli, Steve Eslinger and Tom Schneider for helping out on that day.

On Friday, April 24 the club participated in an auction fund raiser with the Roseland and Sunrise Edison Lakes clubs. At this writing we do not know the financial result but that event always draws a lot of fun and fellowship as well as financial results. Stay tuned.

On that same Friday evening, April 24, Fred and Bev Bettner represented the club at a going-away party for the GSE Team which was held at Tippecanone Resturant. Representatives from Downtown Rotary, Elkhart Morning and host families had a great time saying goodbye to these wonderful representatives from the nation of Turkey. The next day, Saturday April 25 the host families gathered again at the local YMCA to see them off to their next site, Kendallville, Indiana.

On that same day, Saturday, April 25 our Rotarians participated in the community’s “Rebuilding Together”  project- painting and repairing a home in Riverpark. As always, this is a great project led by our Paul White.

We hope that every member played some role in these events. Bring a guest to experience the fun, fellowship of events like these.

GSE

For those new to the club those thee initials stand for Group Study Exchange a Rotary International Vocational Exchange Program. Your club has participated for many years in this effort and it is a rewarding experience for all our club members.

At our meeting tomorrow we will be privileged to hear and learn about the nation of Turkey from four young Turkish professionals and their team leader. They will be speaking to us and will share with us a power point presentation about themselves, their families, their work and their nation. Our club will be hosting them all day tomorrow beginning at 8:30 AM for a guided tour by our own Don Napoli of the downtown library facility. From there our group will go to the south Bend Chocolate Factory, for a guided tour. At noon they will be our program. Following the noon luncheon we will accompany them to the Mayor’s office for time with him and his staff. They will receive a tour of the City-County Building as well. The final event will be a guided tour of the Studebaker Museum.

As of this writing Don Napoli, Steve Eslinger and Fred Bettner will provide transportation for the team members to the events throughout the day.

This is a very special program we hope none of you will miss. Please plan to be here.

THOUGHTS FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear South Gateway Rotarians:

Just a reminder to everyone that Tuesday will be the last day for me to collect items for our dinner/auction fund raiser. If you forget to bring an item, you still can pickup something and drop it by my office by Thursday. Registration for the dinner can still be made at the door: I would not advise it as it is always best to get your money and registration in ahead of time—unless you really like paying extra. This will be a fun evening; cocktails start at 6:00 PM with dinner at 6:30 and the auction beginning at 7:00. Once again, if you know someone who would like to donate an item for the auction, please ask; the more items, the better.

Big thanks to Mike Tinny and Fred Bettner for their assistance with RYLA over the weekend. Great job, guys!

Also, if you have not signed up with Paul White for the Christmas in April project this Saturday, please do so. Paul, as always does a great job with this.

Thanks, Paul,

Jerry Hunt, President

Breakfast With Santa, December 6, 2008:

South Gateway Rotary held its 2008 Annual "Breakfast with Santa," at First Christian Church on Saturday, December 6th , and it was a great success with over 200 in attendance! The event included a pancake and sausage breakfast, orange juice, milk, and coffee. About 100 children got to sit on Santa's lap for a heartfelt conversation. The event also included balloon animals, face painting, and Christmas ornament crafts for each child. Admission was only $6.00 per person. Proceeds will benefit several local charities sponsored by South Gateway Rotary. This was a fun time for all the family just before the Christmas holidays!

Check out our "Breakfast with Santa" homepage for photos of this great annual event!
